Inspiring quotes – Show Your Work -1

I have read this book almost a year ago, and it was inspiring of how you would think of your work/career as it’s something that you are proud of to present to others. This book aim to teach you how to influence others by letting them steal from you. It’s also let you know why/how/ what to share valuable things that you have done in the past. Everything you do and you will, is a matter of process of successful achievement.

I will share the best quote blocks that I found to me very interesting and inspiring according to the 10 topics. First, I’ll share only the first five topics, then I’ll share the next five in part 2. This is not a book review.

“Be so good they can’t ignore you.” If you just focus on getting really good…, people will come to you. You don’t really find an audience for your work; they find you… In order to be found, you have to be findable.”

1. You don’t have to be a genius

  • “Being a valuable part of a scenius is not necessarily about how smart or talented you are, but about what  you have to contribute- the ideas you share, the quality of the connections you make, and the conversations you start.”
  • “Amateurs are not afraid to make mistakes or look ridiculous in public… Amateurs know that contributing something is better than contributing nothing.”
  • “The stupidest possible creative act is still a creative act.” – Caly Shirky

2. Think process, not product

  • “To all viewers but yourself, what matters is the product: the finished artwork. To you, and you alone, what matters is the process: the experience of shaping the artwork.”
  • “Become a documentarian of what you do. Start a work journal: Write your thoughts down in a notebook , or speak them into an audio recorder. Keep a scrapbook.”

3. Share something small every day

  • “If you’re in the very early stage, share your influences and what’s inspiring you. If you’re in the middle of executing a project, write about your methods or share work in progress.”
  • “Don’t say you don’t have enough time. We’re all busy, but we all get 24 hours a day. People often ask me, “How do you find the time for all this? And I answer, ” I look for it.”
  • “Be open, share imperfect and unfinished work that you want feedback, but don’t share absolutely everything. That’s a big, big difference between sharing and over sharing.”
  • “Don’t make compromises. Don’t worry about making a bunch of money or being successful. Be concerned with doing good work… and if you can build a good name, eventually that name will be its own currency.”

4. Open up your cabinet of curiosities

  • “When you find things you genuinely enjoy, don’t let anyone else make you feel bad about it. Don’t feel guilty about the pleasure you take in the things you enjoy. Celebrate them!”
  • “The problem with hoarding is you end up living off your reserves. Eventually, you’ll become stale. If you give away everything you have, you are left with nothing. This forces you to look, to be aware, to replenish… somehow the more you give away, the more comes back to you.” – Paul Arden

5. Tell good stories

  • “Your work doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Whether you realize it or not, you’re already telling a story about your work. Every email you send, every text, every blog… – they’re all bits and pieces of a multimedia narrative you’re constantly construction. If you want to be more effective when sharing yourself and your work. You need to know what a good story is and how to tell one.”
